Mood Board Learning & Primary Mood Board for my project

When trying to convey a design idea, moods, feelings and fluffy stuff like that are hard to communicate. So professional designers will often use mood boards: a collection of textures, images and text related to a design theme as a reference point.

Mood boards help others to 'get inside our heads' in order to convey a thematic setting for a design or to explain function in piece of work.

Real world inspirations are all around us. So use the camera on your phone to take pictures of everything you see that inspires you - whether that be a bird in flight, a great use of typography on a sign, or the brickwork on a building. They don't have to be great photos in the traditional sense - it's all about capturing thoughts, impressions, themes and feelings.

When putting together mood boards, think of yourself as a curator rather than a collector, and try to have meaning and threads from one image to the next. It makes for easier interpretation.

Whether it's being electronic or physical, the layout of your mood board needs to give prominence to key theme images, then surround these with smaller supporting images that enhance the theme.

When someone looks at a large image on your board in their heads they'll have questions about it - which they'll quickly scan the rest of the board to find answers for. If you place smaller supporting images around the larger image they should do this job for you by clarifying the messaging given in the larger one.

Locking an idea or a style down in a mood board can be detrimental, as the client will feel shoehorned into going with a particular style. Keep everything a little loose and don't make everything look too finalised.
If you're using preview images from image libraries don't worry about the watermarking on them - it all adds up to a 'hey look, we can change this - these are ideas' feel to the board.

Don't ignore the power of a few isolated words on a board. They're fantastic show-stoppers and give your viewer pause for thought as they have to mentally read what's in front of them. Big, bold words juxtaposed together work very well at creating drama, tone and meaning for any project.

Finally, don't forget to test out your boards before you send them off. Remember, it's not a game of Pictionary, so if your testing audience have to ask too many times what an image means or why it's there, then it probably shouldn't be there in the first place.

The whole process of creating mood boards should be fun - a refreshing break from the often tedious tasks of the jobbing designer. If you're not having fun then it's a sure sign you're going about things the wrong way...

Here is a mood board that I have primarily developed for my personal project, I plan to execute a book project contain the use of conceptual photography in its content, on purpose to practice my personal creative thinking skills and planning skills. I plan to use photo manipulation in graphic design field to execute the content in the way to combine my photography and graphic design skills. I choose the thin sans sarif fonts in content, cause it gives the clean, simple and clear style of the contents. I have chosen 5 styles of fonts.

This mood board is a primary decision, I will develop more later on in the process of doing this project.

Campaign Video "For Peace, Paradox" & Learning Outcomes

Final Campaign Video / Short Film "For Peace, Paradox"

Above is the final work I have done for this group-work campaign, it is a short film I have made called "For Peace, Paradox" I have used paradox logic to construct the story, it is true death finds peace, but in real logic, death isn't the only way to find peace, however death takes everything away from the mankind. World peace depends on each one of us - the human kind to understand peace in a right way, humanity needs to have the inner peace from the individuals to construct world peace.

Knowledge
1. Describe appropriate research methods and processes in relation to their chosen field of study or project.
In this entire semester, I have improved my research and reading skills; I have found different sources to read on the internet from different websites and blogs.
In the beginning of the semester, I have done a research of "humanity" and "humanity issues" link 1: http://kalilasnowjan.blogspot.com/2013/09/humanity-reasearch.html this link directs to the first research essay I have done in the beginning of the semester.
In this essay, I have read different materials from wikipedia to understand what humanity and humanity issue defines; and concluded a paragraph of how I personally understand term "humanity".
Then I have found materials from The University of Western Australia's webpage which had listed the "Top Ten humanity issues" and did a deeper research on human rights and issues from Amnesty International USA.
Since humanity issue is a very philosophical topic, I had read a philosophical article online which inspired me a lot in different aspects, such as my personal life, and people/humans around me.

2. Plan an individual research project appropriate to their chosen field of study/practice.
The mission of this semester is to create a campaign to address the issues we have found in humanity through research, and focus on the issue to give solutions, In this link, it directs to the second research essay I have written, link 2:  http://kalilasnowjan.blogspot.com/2013/10/campaign-planningprocess.html In this essay, I had done a research of term "campaign" to understand what campaign is, what it does, and how it works. This essay had started off the entire project, it is a base of creating a good campaign; so later on I would be able to develop the entire campaign.
In this mission our class had been divided  into groups; In our group, we decided the main issue that we are going to focus and address that is "War"link 3: http://kalilasnowjan.blogspot.com/2013/10/war-and-weapons-research.html This link redirects to the research I have done to deeply understand what war had done to humanity and why it happened and existed in our world, I have also read materials of different weapons that had been used in the wars and are still being continuously developed and produced. This research is the second step of the entire campaign, and I have learned many histories which I hadn't known before, the new knowledges had enriched me and in the meantime shocked me.
Later on, our team had decided to divide different fields of work to each team mate, I was to focus on a campaign video which is a short film had been shown in the beginning of this article; to address the issues of war is to help humanity find peace, so I had started researching about term "peace" I have watched different campaign videos that have the same intension, and I have also found many famous people's quotes which did give me a lot of inspirations. (the evidence contains in link 2)

Thinking Skills
3. Demonstrate innovative and creative problem solving attributes within a chosen area of study.
In this campaign Video, I had used "paradox logic" to present this campaign, the video is a tragic story ends up with the main character committing a suicide to find his peace. in general logic, that "peace" is something beautiful and positive, but I had chosen the subject matter into a very dark and negative material to indicate peace, and it gives a giant contrast to make the audience understand peace in an inspiration and realisation of how terrible not having inner peace will cause. "Death leads to peace" is true, but it won't logically work in real situations; here is the paradox I have used.

4. Select and implement appropriate analytical techniques.
Personally I am satisfied with what I have done for this campaign, the main focus of the campaign is the short film.
In this film, the picking of the music is appropriate to indicated each moments, the paradox logic subject matter may seem very sad to indicate peace, but it has got its own values and inspirations to an amount of people, realisation is the most important object in the film; to understand this film is to understand how peace works. The narration of the story could have been more concise and clear. Skills of video editing is fine, effects are not over used, and it has got a good sequence and matches the sound effects and soundtracks.

Subject - Based Practical Skills
5. Be able to work safely and competently within a widening range of Graphic Design techniques and practices.

Skills for life and work (general skills)
6. Identify the nature and sources of information needed to write a research proposal and report (project proforma and evaluative journal).

For Peace, Paradox. - short film story board developement

To start with
In our campaign, we have decided to create a campaign about peace delivered by the internet; we started with research about wars and peace, and the elements that cause war and fights in our life.

To start with, we created a Facebook community page that's private within all of our team mates in it.
Peace group
We share our discussions, research, knowledge and ideas through this page.

There are 4 of us in our group: Myra, Faizal, Jaja and me Kalila. We have decided the members to focus on the certain part of campaign to work with, Myra and Jaja are focusing on the graphic part such as logos. Faizal and me are focusing on the short film we are going to produce.

The short film is about bringing people together and make them realise that world peace is constructed by each one of us on this planet; having a peaceful heart about everything is going to make our life better and make the human race live in peace.
"Peace" people think

I've found this source from a video Faizal has shared on our "Peace Group" It is an interview video on youtube, it's asking and interviewing about what people think about "peace", watch the video click on: http://youtu.be/29SixPDoYUA
So most people think that peace comes from the individuals. The opinions that I have found valuable are:  "Fights are among everywhere, in children's playgrounds, in adults's work stages and sports, people are always looking for a fight,"
"We all see things differently, speak differently, eat different, talk different and do things differently, but one think we have in common is that we are all humans, I guess that should be enough for us to want to live in peace."
"The only way to find peace inout society is us individuals find peace."
"If every human being on the planet had inner peace, our planet will be in peace."

Knowing what people think about peace is the key to start a concept on our campaign, but it's not everything that we need to start off. After the research of how people think about peace, I've started doing research on what the famous people say about peace. So I came out with many quotes about peace said by different famous people.
The notes of quotes I've found online
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but world war IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein
This quote is the best I know, said by Elbert Einstein. World war 3 has yet not started, according to the world weapons now, if world war 3 has started, none of us will be able to get rid of the pain the war caused us; chemical weapons a very destructive weapon that effects human beings and environment by gas. nu-clear weapons is also a very destructive weapon that cause explosion in a big amount of land.
World will be destroyed by the world war 3, so the next war after world war 3 will be fought with the very natural and original materials of the planet.
"Peace is always beautiful." - Walt Whitman
Peace unlike anything else, it is a thing that makes the world and people balanced, and it is a very beautiful thing that exists in our world.
"Peace can not be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding." - Albert Einstein
No one in this world can tell people to be peaceful and they will be, not the government, not the head of the world, it should be understood by everyone in the world to build a world peace.
"The more we sweat in peace, the less we bleed in war." - Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit
"Death must be so beautiful, to lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow, to forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace." - Oscar Wilde, The Canterville Ghost
Peace can be found by death which is a paradox logic to analyse peace, but death is not the only way to find peace.
"Peace is not made at the council table or by treaties, but in the hearts of men." - Herbert Hoover

The quotes that I have found will be used in the film to direct the audience. With these materials, I have started building a story for the short film development, these quotes are going to be references for this short film.

For Peace, Paradox.
The name of the entire short film project are going to be called "For Peace, Paradox." Why is the name like so? First of all, it is a story using paradox; A boy who lives as a photographer who cares about peace so much that he finds peace in a wrong way, that is to kill people and himself to let them find peace in death, which is true that peace can be found by death, but death is not the only way to find peace.
Storyboard sketches on notebook
To start with this short film project, first of all, I need a story board, the image above is the first story board sketches I have done on my sketchbook, it is a simple story board that has not much information into it, so I have decided to start with a concise story board that's based on A4 format.
In this story board, we can see the first scene of the entire film, the first shot and story line is the main character found dead on his sofa (where he sleeps) with the alarm clock "bee bee" at the background sound. then a flash back motion to what happened at the beginning, and how/why he is found dead. The main character wakes up on a usual day, he leaded himself doing the usual morning stuff such as brushing teeth, washing face, cooking and eating and reading news on his laptop.

Story board page 1
With further discussion with our guidance Mr. Kamarul, I have decided to change the scene 1 a little; instead of showing the main character found dead, we can show this scene with shots that metaphorically represent someone's in trouble and situation of death. To do that, we can shoot this scene involving a car, the movement of the car and the fast movement, with a ambulance siren sound. It could be the movement of the wheels (how fast they move)
In scene 2, the main character reads news about war and peace, that shows how much this character cares about topic "peace"

Storyboard page 2
When the main character was reading news, he had received a message from his friend, "Can we party at your place tonight?" he replies"OK" as a response. The next shot is the main character grabbing his camera and going out of his house for a walk.
In scene 3, originally I drew the scene that's in a shop, the main character buys magazines about world war, but I have added another scene into it which I haven't added on the story board, this new scene involves our campaign project.
Our campaign logo designed by me
This logo is going to shown in this new scene, the main character walks up to a ad board, and found this flyer on the board, and next to it, there's an envelope that says"take a peace"on the surface; he finds this very interesting, he took a picture of it and took a few "peaces"/ flyers out of the envelope.
In scene 4, the main character comes back home and sits back to his laptop and started working till late and dark outside, in the shot of him working in front of his laptop, we are going to use time lapse technique to show this shot.
In scene 5, it's getting dark, his friends came for the party as mentioned in scene 2.

storyboard page 3
A party has started, in the party, things like fighting, girl friend yelling at the main character had happened, and things like painting on the magazines and the flyers he had bought in the shop some funny stuff also had happened, these make the main character pissed off and hate his friends and girl friend for being not peaceful and respectful for peace.
In scene 6, he started being mad, and created a folder named "for peace" on his desktop, and dragged his girl friend's picture into the folder, afterwards he started feeling dizzy and fell asleep.

storyboard page 4
In scene 7, the character wakes up in dizziness the next day, and did the same routine in the morning. surprisingly, he found his girl friend dead in the news page, and received another message from his friend: "we heard it, rest in PEACE" the word "peace" had leaded him to the folder he had created the night before, he opens the folder and found his girl friend's picture became black and white with a red cross on the surface. Did he kill his girl friend?

storyboard page 5
When he found out his girlfriend has died, he wants to delete the folder he had created, but the memory of what happened in the party won't let him, and leaded him to drag other friends of his into the folder, he had fell asleep again…
In scene 8, the next morning when alarm starts kicking in, empty bathroom, empty kitchen, and empty laptop with no one sits in front of it, he did not wake up.

Storyboard page 6
Later in the evening
In scene 9, the main character wakes up in misery, and had found more of his friends dead on the news, to feel relief, he grabbed cigarettes and went to the balcony for a smoke, while smoking, he heard fighting noises from the neighbours, and that made him pissed off again, grabbed his camera and going out wanting to take pictures of those people who are fighting, and kill them in the folder. but by the moment when he opens the door, something had changed inside him, he realised that he can't kill everyone to find peace. He sat back to his laptop, opened the Photo Booth and took a picture of himself, and dragged his own picture in to the folder…

World peace depends on each one of us, killing each other does not get any better in out humanity.
Death is not the only way to find peace, finding peace is to understand peace and find your own inner peace.
Stay calm.
Let's stop killing each other.
Let's stop this cruel "cannibalism"

This is a very negative film that's using paradox, to not confuse the audience, I have wrote lines to add in for the end of the film.

Logo
Peace is a state of mind
I have made this logo inspired by the quotes I have found.
"Peace can not be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding." - Albert Einstein
"Peace is not made at the council table or by treaties, but in the hearts of men." - Herbert Hoover
Peace should be understood not forced.

Project Brief + Info Graphics (Peace) group work

PROJECT BRIEF

Students Name: Kalila, Faizal, Myra

Module Name: Graphic Design 2 – Part 2               Module Code: DV2750
Lecturer: Mr.Kamarul                                            Date: 10/24/2013

Name of your Task:  Campaign about one of the human issues (Peace)
1. What do we want to do?
We chose “peace” as our topic and theme.
- What is the problem we are trying to address?
World War I (WWI), also known as the First World War, was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. From the time of its occurrence until the approach of World War II in 1939, it was called simply the World War or the Great War, and thereafter the First World War or World War I.The war drew in all the world's economic great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United KingdomFrance and the Russian Empire) and the Central Powers of Germany andAustria-Hungary. Although Italy had also been a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive against the terms of the alliance. These alliances were both reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, and the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria the Central Powers.

World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.
Nuclear Weapon
A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions
even a small nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire, and radiation. Nuclear weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction, and their use and control have been a major focus of international relations policy since their debut. Nuclear weapons have been used twice in the course of warfare, both times by the United States near the end of World War II. On 6 August 1945, a uranium gun-type fission bomb code-named "Little Boy" was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, on 9 August, a plutonium implosion-type fission bomb code-named "Fat Man" was exploded over Nagasaki, Japan. These two bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 people—mostly civilians—from acute injuries sustained from the explosions.

Chemical weapon: A chemical weapon (CW) is a device that uses chemicals formulated to inflict death or harm on human beings. They may be classified as weapons of mass destruction though they are separate from biological weapons (diseases), nuclear weapons and radiological weapons(which use radioactive decay of elements). Chemical weapons can be widely dispersed in gas, liquid and solid forms and may easily afflict others than the intended targets. Nerve gas and tear gas are two modern examples.
Syria chemical weapons: Since the early 1980s, Syria has made efforts to acquire and maintain an arsenal of chemical weapons. Regional security concerns, and most notably Syria's adversarial relationship with Israel, represent the most likely present-day motivation behind Syria's chemical weapons program. Syria's chemical weapons program began in the 1970s with weapons and training from Egypt and the Soviet Union, with production of chemical weapons in Syria beginning in the mid-1980s. In September 2013 Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention (formally acceding on 14 October), and agreed to the destruction of its weapons, to be supervised by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as required by the Convention. Syria had been one of a handful of states which had not ratified the Convention, and joined after international condemnation of the August 2013 Ghouta chemical attack, which Western states held the Syrian government responsible for (whilst Syria and Russia held the Syrian rebels of the Syrian civil war responsible). Prior to September 2013 Syria had not publicly admitted to possessing chemical weapons, although Western intelligence services believed it to hold one of the world's largest stockpiles. In September 2013, French intelligence put the Syrian stockpile at 1,000 tonnes, including Yperite, VX and "several hundred tonnes of sarin". In October 2013, the OPCW found a total of 1,300 tons of chemical weapons.

World War III (also called WWIII or the Third World War) is a hypothetical succession World War II (1939–1945).
A US plan for military intervention in Syria could result in escalation and the integration of  “four distinct war theaters”– Afghanistan-Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine and Libya– setting the stage for “a World War III scenario. President Obama loves to prance around and assure people that an operation in the country would be quick, but the likelihood of that happening is almost non-existent. Russia, Iran, and China are all telling the US to stay put and not enter Syria. If either China or Russia involve themselves to go against a US military attack, World War 3 suddenly makes a whole lot of sense considering the power that both countries have.

Fights are everywhere, in children’s playgrounds, in adults’ work stage, sports, people seem to always look for a fight. World war, hatred, anger, violence, greediness and even racism are the main factors and elements that inner peace won’t contain among our world, and they are the reasons why our world isn’t still peaceful. What is peace? The problem we are trying to address here is to make people understand what peace is all about, and how can we make our world more peaceful. It spreads out by the individuals.

- What is the main objective?
A lot of people don’t care how peace is important to our world or our life. This is an opportunity to make people realize that all together, we spread the meaning of peace from each of us, we will make a better and more peaceful world for us to live.
We are doing a campaign that’s going to get people on this planet to speak up for our world and planet; and to get people’s power all together and we can make a difference. We can’t be quiet of the facts how important peace is to our humanity and our world. Awareness of peace is definitely important to the planet and humanity. And we are here to help our society to find peace by the individual powers of the people.
- What is the Strategy?
Our main strategy to make this campaign effective and it will influence people and make the audience react on our campaign. We are going to show people how awful not to have peace in our humanity, and make them realize how important having a peaceful mind is.
– What is the Campaign going to do? (Role)
This campaign is going to gather people’s power together to support for peace and speak up for peace by creating awareness about after affect of world war 1&2, even the war between people to people such as public fighting, murdering, hatred and emotions of violence or anger; hypothetically after affect of world war 3. In fact a peaceful world come from the individuals from the humans.
– Who we talking to? (Target)
Our audience could be anyone, it could be people who support peace such as hippies, it could also be the people who have anger problem who tend to fight with people, and it could also be the governments which the greediness of controlling world. We are talking to the human race on the planet and tell them to stop killing each other and spread peace from their daily actions and their own attitudes.
– How is it going to be? (Content)
We are going to create a Facebook page to get audience, and we are going to work with a campaign video and post it on Youtube and Vimeo. So our campaign is going to be conveyed through the internet, because the internet is the main media of 2013. We could exploit world political news into our campaign, and even the tiny details in people’s life and attitude to be involved in our campaign, the world needs peace not the hatred & anger between people, and the greediness of conquering other countries, things can be solved peacefully instead of starting a personal/political war.
2. Who are we talking to? And what insights do we have about them?
We are talking to everyone from everywhere on this planet, no differing of races, cause we consider everyone as one. Generations develop through the time, the old generation in the history who suffered from war had taught us much in this generation; we pay our sympathy to those people who had to suffer, we have fears that this disaster will happen to us, we learn from the history and we hope world will be peaceful without anyone suffering. As human beings we are just as weak as a fragile thin stick, we are easy to break and we are easy to hurt.
What do the people think about world war 3 scenario? Should the US intervene in Syria, and if they do, would a major conflict such as “World War 3″ occur? Through research and reading different forums online, the most people on the planet don’t think or believe that US will intervene Syria because most of us want peace to stay. The history of war has already taught us a lot. And a lot of people think that if US intervene in Syria, world war 3 scenario will really happen to our planet and it will involve us. Because we humans have the fears of the terrible things that happened to the people in either world war one or world war two. Those terrible things will definitely happen to us if world war 3 really happens.

3. How do we want the audience to describe the Campaign?
We want our audience to find our campaign positive and something that’s definitely valuable to support, it is going to activate people’s hope inside themselves, and start supporting what’s positive to all of us. We want our campaign to be special and impressive, and unforgettable. Something that can influence people to participate supporting peace that humanities and world really need. We want to deliver a clear and direct message to our audience with a creative concept to effect the campaign and influence, inspire the people.

4. What is the single most important thing our prospects believe or feel about our brand or the category?
Our competition is war, hatred, racism and even violence. All of these elements will always lead the humanity to a peak of disaster, on the contrary, peace seems to always lead the humanity to a bright, peaceful and significant great life. Our world is a paradise without killing each other. It’s OK not to support peace, and it’s OK not to care about how important peace is for all of us. But together all of us (the human race) support and believe in one thing, we will make a change.
“I will die and finally find peace” This is a phrase that we would hear from TV shows, movies or maybe some of your friends or families who are troubled or depressed of the pressure of the reality and bad situation. What’s does death feel like? What will humans feel like after they die? No one knows, but we know that the moment we die, all this mess of the real world and all of this hatred and immoral issues will end for ourselves for good. Is dying really a solution of this big mess? No! Finding peace is the real and feasible solution for us. Supporting peace and throwing away our anger out of ourselves is the way to find peace.
“Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.” - Oscar Wilde, The Canterville Ghost

5. How can we make this believable?
We all see things differently, speak different, eat different, talk different and do things differently, but one thing we have in common is that we are all humans, that should be enough for us to want to live in peace.
We will not need to die to find peace! Our target is to create work on a video/short film project to impress and influence our audience, and we will have creative concepts for planning the project and designing the project. The short film should be unforgettable.
First of all, we need to get people to start caring and sweating for peace, there are many people out there know how important peace is, but there are not many people who care. And then we will have to show how a war is happening in our ordinary life to make people realize.
Peace comes from the individuals, all of us; the only way our society world find peace is us individuals find peace. We all see things differently, speak differently, eat different, talk different and do things differently, but one thing we have in common is that we are all humans, that should be enough for us to want to live in peace. If every human being on the planet had inner peace, the world would be so much better and more peaceful.
Paradox: paradox is a statement that apparently contradicts itself and yet might be true. Most logical paradoxes are known to be invalid arguments but are still valuable in promoting critical thinking. We are using paradox logic to create a short film to convince and persuade our audience and achieve this campaign.
We want our target audience to find peace in a right way, and peace is so important that will affect the world with or without it in this world. As a result we want to see as many likes on our Facebook page as possible to prove our campaign. And this campaign will make people know and think that if we all are a little bit peaceful from ourselves by the individuals, the world will remain peace, peace is not controlled by the governments or the political and military management, peace should be from the people on the planet. If every human being on the planet had inner peace, our world will be living inner peace.
“Peace is not made at the council table or by treaties, but in the hearts of men.” - Herbert Hoover

6. What do we have to have an idea about?
Our main idea of this campaign is to support world peace, we cam make the promise because our humanity has this hope to be in peace than having war that kills lots of innocent people.
The history has told and taught us a lot, and we’ve learned a lot from the history, those innocent people who have died during the war did not necessarily have to die to teach us this lesson, we need to stop the facts that there are still people or solders dying out there in the wars. It is a humanity issue that we all need to know, what is war fighting for? Our campaign is going to be a positive topic that’s going to make people understand the problems that we have through paradox logic short films, although the short film will belong to a genre of sad and tragedy, mysterious, paradox and fictional story.
7. Are there any mandatory's?
