Digital Storyboarding and Illustration learning outcomes

1, Illustrate a knowledge of story telling planning.
I wrote my entire story planning in context with each frame of the entire film, and also did some sketches to create the story.

2, Experiment with digital and traditional techniques in producing a story board.
I've experimented with digital photography and using photoshop to create my final storyboard, and I've been practicing sketching and drawing as well to study the traditional method of storyboarding.

3, Employ a detailed plan and techniques to effectively aid the construction of a digital video.
I've planned the entire film by drafting and wrote down the entire plan on the notebook.

4, Compile an online journal which evaluated and reflects the practice.
I've been doing a lot of research on storyboarding and had them updated in my blog to help me develop my ideas, concepts on making the storyboard.

5, Present body of work which demonstrate an understanding of the role of storyboarding in creative story medium.

Reality of Dream storyboard process

At the very beginning of this semester, we started learning sketching and drawing techniques to start working on our story board, there were 3 subject matter, a box, a piece of cloth and a rock. So we started learning how to draw these 3 objects first. Here are some images of my drawing practice:

Then as I start having ideas and concepts for the video project, I drew this simple story board on 4A size papers, this story is a very short story and a very simple concept:

This is a brief storyboard of my first idea. There are not many frames cause the idea of first person’s view. The first idea was very simple and also the story line; a person starts walking in a really drak building and he keeps climbing up to see what is this place, on the first level, he finds a rock written “stay away” on its surface, he picked the rock up and kept walking up, he takes a piece of cloth out of pocket and wipes his sweat off and kept walking up, suddenly, a rumble came from upstairs, the next thing he sees is a box on a skateboard sliding over to him, and there was no one around him, he picks the box and opens it, money appears, ends with a scream.
To help myself learn better, I chose not to go with this idea, instead, I chose to develop more to this video project. So I used some items from the first concept, such as the sliding skateboard with a box on it, and money in the box ends up with a scream in the final video.
As I was saying, music inspires me. I had this new concept between “dream” and “reality” then I thought of continuing working on the campaign.
I got most of the ideas by listening to these 2 tracks in the video, 1, Arrival of the Birds – The Cinematic Orchestra. 2, Rutten – Skream. Music inspires me a lot. Sometime the images come to my mind when I listen to music with my eyes closed, while I was listening to Arrival of the Birds, this waking up in the morning emotion came up to my mind and that’s how I had this “dream to reality” idea in the story line.
Then I did a little sketch to document my ideas

I did not start with drawing a story board for this new concept, I started doing some research on different camera shots, angles and cinematography, to understand more about filming. Then I thought of using my photography skill to create a story board, so I took those pictures for the storyboard below

As I can't draw in speed to tell my story so I decided to take photographs to create a digital storyboard; but for planning the entire movie, setting up a photoshoot just for the storyboard is much to do, then I came up with a better idea to solve this problem, I wrote down the scripts and each frame's action, duration and all in context, then during the video shooting, I could follow the planned context to shoot each scene.

These images are the video planning draft, I shot the videos through these texts.

After the entire video is done, I started working on the digital storyboard, I chose to use photoshop software to create my digital storyboard, the lay out and texts are all made by photoshop. During editing layout I had a lot of mistakes.

The layout of these pages are not very align because I forgot to use Ruler in photoshop, and also the fonts of these pages are not the same, some parts are different fonts by mistake.

After shooting the digital photographs for the storyboard, I drew this by copying the photographs to practice my drawing skill in storyboarding.

Well, this semester, I have learned a lot through all the experiments that I've tried and all the mistakes that I've made, and all the research that I've done. I really enjoy this whole semester, got more skills on film planning and knowledge on cinematography.

Reality of Dream Storyboard

I added some style on the printed cover page of the storyboard
I splashed red color on the cover page with a brush to follow my film's theme, surrealism.
